Chris Wood won the Silver Medal awarded to the top amateur, but he'll be remembered for far more than that: the performance of this 20-year-old from Long Ashton Golf Club was truly brilliant, and surely points to a successful future career at the very top level of the game. With a one-under-par outward half of 33, he then had a run of three bogeys that were understandable on this very tough day. But rather than let this allow him to slip down the leaderboard, Chris pulled himself back with a birdie on 17 that put him right back in the game. This was no one off on the back of a round or two of superb golf: it was a determined performance in the toughest of conditions. Chris never looked less than completely comfortable. Not once did he look out of his depth, and it's to his enormous credit that the prize he was aiming at was clearly the Claret Jug rather than merely the Silver Medal.
Chris stated that “Its been the best week of my life, I didn’t feel any pressure at all really, apart from the first tee.
Recently Chris won the Welsh Amateur Open Strokeplay Championships at Conway Golf Club in
At the Brabazon Trophy in Trevose, Cornwall, Chris was a casualty of the curtailed tournament, shortened to the three rounds due to the weather. The cut was based on first-round scores only and Chris was one shot short of making the cut.
