Captain’s Charity Day at Long Ashton Golf Club in aid of Wooden Spoon, held on Friday 4th July.

The Charity events were kicked off by an Auction of the Teams on Thursday day evening, with Andrew Blowers (picture attached), former rugby All Black star who now plays for Bristol Rugby Club, as the auctioneer. The event was well attended with representatives from nearly every team there to do the bidding. The evening raised over £3000 with 60% of this being paid back in prizes. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening’s fun and had a good laugh at the teams who ended up bidding against fellow team members to purchase their own team.

On Friday morning the Green Keepers were out at 5.30am cutting and rolling the greens to absolute perfection, placing the pins in easy positions as instructed by the Captain and then with the greens stimping at 11.5 Jim declared he was happy with them (almost.) It was also an early start for the staff and organizers to get everything prepared in time for the 1st Team, Billy’s Boy’s, to tee off at 8.10am.

This year saw a record number of teams entering due, in part, to a number of teams that would normally take part in the Wooden Spoon Golf Day entering this event and good support from the membership of the club. Fortunately despite a really bad weather forecast the weather came up trumps with nearly clear skies and not to much wind. The weather held until the last team returned in at about 7.15pm and prize giving was able to proceed without delay.

The Captain would like to thank all those members who helped with the preparation of the day and the helpers who manned the Registration Table, the Starters and the Halfway house. At the end of the day the Captain was pleased to announce that over £6,000 had been raised.

The competition was won by the Greenkeepers team. (Picture attached)
