Update on the European Tour Player Skins Match raising over £24,000 for Charity!

Captain's Charity Day - Rich Wood

I would just like to include this quick update and thank you note regarding the Captains Charity Day and Skins Exhibition Match held at Long Ashton GC last Monday 23rd July.

The weather held beautifully on the day and I think everyone agrees it was a fantastic show of great golf put on by Chris Wood, David Horsey and Jamie Donaldson. They all reported they really enjoyed the day and were of the opinion it should happen more often. The entertainment value of the golf was greatly enhanced by the unique on course commentary from John Morgan and the insightful on course interviews and updates from Geoff Twentyman. The charity auction was very succesful and the show put on by Paul Barrington who displayed his amazing range of trick shots and golf ball hitting skills finished the day off perfectly.

I estimate around 400-500 speactators attended and helped to make the day a wonderful occasion for the golf club. The scene looking back from the 18th fairway at the sea of people making their way from the tee is something I will never forget. (see pic)

The final total raised for charity has not been reconciled yet but initial estimates indicate around £24,000. This will be donated to various charities with £8,000 going to Chris Wood's chosen charity Childrens Hospice South West, £7,000 to David Horsey's charity Breat Cancer Now, £3,000 to Jamie Donaldson's charity East Cheshire Hospice and approximately £6,000 to my charity the RNLI (Portishead).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the day a success, our greenkeeping staff for presenting the course and greens (which the players thought were fantastic) superbly, Glenn's dining room staff for keeping eveyone filled with food, Nick's bar staff for keeping everyone watered, the office staff for putting up with all my changes and promoting (including Ken Trowbridge) the event, The on-course marshall's headed by Robbie Park who drove through the night after marshalling at Carnoustie to make it to LAGC, the car park volunteers and to Andy Cox and Chris Geeson for chauffeuring the players.

In particular I would to highlight the sponsors whose contribution provided the foundation for the day: Hole Company / Sponsor

2 Dribuild / Mike Holt

The Last 25 Years – to complement the publication produced for our centenary in 1993, the club is in the process of at compiling a book to include the major highlights of the period from 1993 to the present day.
Contributions have been sought from a number of members in order to compile a comprehensive summation of the achievements of the various sections of the club, and progress has been excellent.
The original timeframe was publication at the beginning of April, 2018, however it has been decided to postpose this till later in the year in order to include memories of our 125th Anniversary.
The original intention was to include the last 25 years as part of a republication of the centenary book published in 1993. However, due to technical issues and the lack of original photographs, the plan now is to look at a professional scan of the original book to be uploaded to the members section of the web site for all members, old and new, to view.

Matches with other 1993 Clubs – the inaugural triangular tournament with Wells and Cirencester will be played at Wells Golf Club on Sunday 15th July. It is hoped that this may become an annual fixture, with each club acting as hosts in turn.
12 Members of LAGC are looking forward to playing the famous Old Course at Ballybunion Golf Club on the west coast of Ireland. Like LAGC, Ballybunion are also celebrating the 125th Anniversary, and it’s something of a coup for our golf club to be invited to share in their celebrations.

Club Memorabilia– our Professional shop is now well stocked with exclusive merchandise and memorabilia in celebration of our 125th anniversary, so hurry along and pay a visit.

Ladies/Senior Sections – in addition to the events outlined above both the Ladies and Senior sections have plans to hold additional events, all under the umbrella of the 125th Anniversary. This will also extend to the Junior section.

125 Draw– this fund-raising facility has been in force since March 2016, and will run to August 2018. Each month 2 lucky participants are selected for 1st and 2nd prizes; currently this is £170 and £50 respectively. All proceeds from the 50/50 draw will provide funds to support events during our 125th Anniversary.
It’s never too late to join the draw, so please get in touch with the office and they will provide all the relevant details.

125th Anniversary Legacy– notwithstanding the numerous events planned for our 125 years, the committee are now looking at the erection of a legacy stone, incorporating a plaque celebrating our 125 years. Watch this space for further information.

I’ve been a member at Long Ashton since I was 10 years old and it is a very friendly club. I always look forward to playing the course as it presents a different challenge every time you go out.
